Although the Ordinance on Doctoral Studies allows doctoral theses to be written in German, French, Italian, or English, a solid command of English is always essential. The external page Language Center of UZH and ETH Zurich therefore offers a wide range of English courses and supports students in developing their academic and professional communication skills.

However, because courses at Bachelor¡¯s degree level are mostly held in German and courses at Master¡¯s level in some degree programmes are also partially in German, knowledge of German can be desirable or even imperative. In addition, learning German makes integration easier, extends your horizons and connects you to a new culture. It can also be a prerequisite for a career in an international company in Switzerland after you complete your doctorate.
