The Respect Programme in the spring semester
In March 2026, the Respect Programme will start again with exciting topics. All ETH members are invited to further deepen their skills for constructive and value-based cooperation in practice-oriented workshops and presentations.
Under the guiding principle of "Respect – Reflect – Respond", the programme will once again offer compact learning and impulse formats in the spring semester that are designed to strengthen skills in good cooperation, conflict management and inclusion. The offerings address practical issues and support participants in adopting new perspectives and integrating concrete methods into their everyday work and study routines.
Understanding emotions and using them effectively
The Respect Programme will kick off with a keynote speech by Dirk Eilert on Tuesday, 3 March 2026. The renowned emotion researcher will provide in-depth insights into the scientific study of emotions and show how facial expressions and emotions act as important indicators of our behaviour. The focus will be on how emotional signals can be perceived more consciously, correctly classified and used in a targeted manner – especially in work and decision-making situations.

Cooperation under pressure: insights from extreme contexts
Another highlight will be the presentation by ETH alumnus Jan Schmutz on Thursday, 16 April 2026. The psychologist and Professor of applied team research at the University of Zurich studies teams under high stress in extreme contexts such as Antarctic stations, space analogue missions and high-risk industries. In his presentation, he will explain the principles that enable successful cooperation under pressure and how teams deal constructively with mistakes, conflicts and setbacks – because it is precisely these situations that represent crucial learning and development opportunities.
What makes for good cooperation? What we can learn from extreme situations
