Royal Astronomical Society Gold Medal 2026 for Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson is Professor of Earth and Planetary Magnetism at D-EAPS. His instrumental work in the field of geomagnetism led to the creation of a model which has been used by "virtually every study of the historical magnetic field of the last 20 years". In receiving the Society's highest honour - which dates back 200 years - he joins the likes of Stephen Hawking, Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Albert Einstein and Edwin Hubble.

Since the start of the year, the Executive Board domain of Finance and Controlling has been divided into five administrative departments. The new structure partially realigns knowledge and specialist skills from the previous units and is intended to create a solid foundation for tackling challenges in the areas of compliance, controlling and the digitalisation of administrative processes in the best possible way.

Guy Parmelin, president of the Swiss Confederation, has announced a nationwide minute's silence at 2 p.m. on Friday, 9 January 2026, in memory of the victims of the fire in Crans-Montana. The Executive Board asks ETH members to discuss in advance how they would like to observe this moment within their team or unit.

Systems biologist Bernd Wollscheid has been honoured for his discoveries in the field of proteomics. The award, presented by the Human Proteome Organisation, recognises his pioneering work in decoding the ‘surfaceome’ – the totality of all proteins on the cell surface.
